Our Mission
The Dirt Conservancy restores and rewilds underused land across Western Pennsylvania—turning forgotten, post-industrial sites into public outdoor spaces that support both ecosystems and recreation.
Our work blends ecological restoration with purpose-built trail design, creating places where people can ride, hike, and reconnect with nature while supporting local economies.
Restore
We heal soil, stabilize slopes, control erosion, and re-establish native habitat on derelict or post-industrial land—reviving ecosystems for the long term.
Build
We design and construct purpose-built, sustainable trail networks for biking, hiking, and outdoor learning—with signage, drainage, and safety in mind.
Revitalize
We activate public land for community well-being and small-business growth—bringing visitors who support local food, fuel, lodging, and outfitters.
What is Rewilding?
Rewilding means restoring ecological function to land that’s been damaged or abandoned—often former industrial sites.
We heal soil, plant native species, and repair water flow so wildlife returns and ecosystems can self-sustain.
Then we integrate low-impact, sustainable trails so people can experience the recovered landscape and see restoration in action.
Why Public Land?
Private bike parks are exciting, but access can vanish when ownership changes.
Public land projects create durable, equitable access and long-term community benefit.
By working with municipalities and land trusts, we protect outdoor access for everyone — ensuring these places remain open, safe, and sustainable for generations to come.
